Sign Up for Space in Madrid Community Gardens

Get ready for warm weather and plan your garden now! Sign up for either a 4 x 4 foot or a 4 x 8 foot raised bed in the new Madrid Community Garden. Reserve a gardens for a $20 refundable deposit. These small garden plots will produce lots of fresh vegetables to feed your family. Depending on the size of plot you choose and the type of plants you decide to use, you can harvest and plant again for a fall crop. Compact planting prevents weed growth and conserves water. Your crops can be reached easily from all sides of the garden bed.

The Gardens are open to anyone with a Madrid address. For more information or to reserve your bed, please contact Rhonda Reynolds Bingman at 515-480-7017. The number of plots is limited.

Softball Registration

Softball registration will be held on Saturday, February 10 from 10 am to 1 pm at the Madrid Public Library. Girls must be ages 4 to 13. For questions, contact Ben Murry at 515-205-2595.

Boone County Labor Employment Project

Where do Boone County employees reside? The Boone County Economic Growth Corporation is partnering with Iowa Workforce Development’s Regional Research Bureau to learn about the local labor force. Local businesses and residents may be contacted by a call from the 319 area code to participate in surveys about where they live, current and desired wages, current and desired benefits, education level and type of occupation. No personal information will be requested (name, social security number or date of birth).

Survey results will help inform local businesses of how to remain competitive in the labor market and also will help demonstrate what is needed to attract new industry to the area. Iowa Arboretum Photo Contest

The Iowa Arboretum is celebrating its 50-year anniversary with a photo contest! Head out to the Arboretum and photograph its beauty and then enter your pictures. The contest is broken into four parts to capture each season, winter, spring, fall and summer. The first opportunity to enter is already live, running from January 8 until February 28. MAC Donates to Greater Love

The Madrid Area Chamber of Commerce (MAC) Christmas Extravaganza, held in December, was a success. Local residents came out in the evening to enjoy the parade, a visit with Santa, soup supper, dance performance and local artists sale. In addition, the Avenue of Trees included many lovely and clever decorations, which were donated by local businesses and auctioned off during the Extravaganza. The successful auction allowed MAC to donate $250 to Greater Love Ministries in Madrid.

7th Annual Animated and Musical Holiday Lights Display

Check out 611 South Market Street to see a beautiful display of Christmas lights and music. The display lights are lit from 6 to 10 pm each night until January 1, 2018. Nick Snider and Sarah Carr create the display each year, and they have about 13,000 lights this year! Tune in to 101.7 FM to listen to music accompanying the light show.

Christmas Extravaganza on December 4

The Madrid Christmas Extravaganza will be on Monday, December 4, 2017. The Lighted Parade will begin at 6:00 pm;  line up at St. John’s Lutheran Church. For more detail visit the event’s page.

Madrid’s SHARE Program Seeks Volunteers

Looking for a way to help others and get involved in the community! SHARE is a local nonprofit food purchasing group that provides high quality and nutritious products at a reduced cost through a volunteer led, community-based distribution system. Halloween Light Show in Madrid

Check out the Halloween light display at 611 S Market Street in Madrid from 7-10 pm. The light show syncs with the radio, channel 101.7 FM. The show will run from October 18 until October 31. Happy Halloween!
