Meet a MAC Member: Madrid Family Practice

Madrid Family PracticeThe Madrid Family Practice Clinic provides its services to the entire community, all ages included. Although connected to the Madrid Home, the clinic is for the public. Well-child visits, vaccinations, sports physicals, and some small procedures are available through the Madrid Clinic. They are open five days a week.

Mel Hilsabeck, ARNP, has been working with the clinic since 2004. She worked as an R.N. for ten years at the clinic prior to taking on her role as a Nurse Practitioner so that she could better help patients. Josh Chrisopulos, PA-C, has been with the clinic for a year and a half and has prior experience in hospice care. His passions are preventative health and cancer treatment.

Involvement with the community is important to the clinic, and they have sought ways to engage through events such as the Labor Day parade, and by being involved in the school. Mel says she loves being in Madrid because she likes the “atmosphere of being involved with whole families.” Josh says he likes working for a small business in Madrid because “you meet people and you don’t forget them. Patients are not just a number.”

Meet a MAC Member: Iowa Arboretum

Iowa ArboretumThe Iowa Arboretum recently celebrated both its 50th anniversary and its achievement of
the Master Plan that was set in place in 2015. This resource was started by the Iowa State
Horticultural Society shortly after they purchased 40 acres in 1966. In 1968, the Iowa Arboretum
became an official nonprofit.

The purpose of the Iowa Arboretum, according to its mission statement, is “to be an inspiring
educational and recreational resource demonstrating the value and use of trees, shrubs, and
other plants in the Iowa landscape.” Since its beginnings, the Arboretum has grown in both size
and opportunities it provides.

In addition to being a space in which people can learn about native Iowa plants, the Arboretum
offers itself as a venue to celebrate life events, such as weddings and family reunions.
Mark Schneider, executive director, notes, “For Madrid to have a public garden is incredible.”

He invites the Madrid community to come and enjoy the large spectrum of opportunities
available at the arboretum. Eagle scout projects, partnerships, learning activities, and social
gatherings are some of the ways through which the Iowa Arboretum invites the community to be
involved. There are also volunteering opportunities, as the Arboretum is a nonprofit and there are
various services to fill.

Schneider explains that being a part of the growth of Madrid is a great opportunity for the
Arboretum. He says that those involved at the Arboretum are “Glad to be a part of the good things
going on in Madrid.” He recommends the community “Come out! It’s a wonderful resource.”
For more information on how to be involved with the various opportunities at the Iowa
Arboretum, access the website at IowaArboretum.org.
